About us

The same faces, job after job.

Jamie and Kevin have each worked with the company for more than 30 years, bringing a wealth of experience to every project. Kyle and Luke both joined us at 16 and are now in their early twenties, having developed their skills and grown with the business.

Alongside our own team, we work with a trusted network of specialist subcontractors who are among the best tradespeople in the area and share the high standards we expect on every job.

Today, we undertake everything from extensions and renovations to complete new builds, bringing the same care and pride to every project. Much of our work comes from recommendations and repeat customers, which is something we are very proud of.

Three generations. One family business.

1965

First generation

William & Eileen Pocock

William founded W. Pocock & Sons in Reading in 1965. Known as a respected and trustworthy builder, he built the business on hard work, honest advice and quality workmanship. While William led the building work, his wife Eileen looked after all the office administration and played an important role in running the company.

Together, they established a family business built to last. William taught his sons, Paul, Terry and Clive, the trade and passed on the standards that would guide the next generation.

Second generation

Paul, Terry, Clive & Christine

Paul, Terry and Clive learned the trade from their father and each attended college to train formally as a bricklayer. They went on to carry the family business forward for decades, building more than 100 new homes and completing many extensions and renovations across Reading and the surrounding area.

Throughout those years, Christine looked after the office administration and helped keep the day-to-day business running smoothly. Together, they continued the standards established by William and Eileen and strengthened the company's reputation as a trusted local building firm.

Paul, Terry and Clive have since retired, with the business now carried forward by the third generation.

Third generation

Sam & April Pocock

William's grandson Sam now leads W. Pocock & Sons as the third generation of the family business. A qualified bricklayer, he remains personally involved throughout each project, from the initial enquiry and quotation through to overseeing the work on site.

Sam and his wife April share responsibility for the office and administration, helping to ensure clear communication and the organised day-to-day running of each project. Together, they continue the family standards of honest advice, quality workmanship and personal service established in 1965.

We take the project on start to finish. Sam brings in the trades, books them in the right order, and keeps them to the programme. You are not chasing a plasterer while an electrician waits on him — that is our job, not yours.

From a shell build to a garden wall, and everything between. If a job needs a trade we do not do ourselves, we bring in someone we have worked with for years rather than sending you off to find one.

Where we work

Builders in Reading and across Berkshire.

We are based at Tilehurst and work across Reading and the surrounding villages. 61 years in one area means we know the housing stock — the 1930s semis on the Oxford Road, the post-war estates in Woodley, the older cottages out towards Burghfield and Bucklebury.

That matters more than it sounds. We have already extended houses like yours nearby, we know what the local building control officers will ask for, and we can usually tell you on the phone whether what you have in mind is straightforward or not.
